We celebrate that the Pilarín Bayés Library in Vic has received the VETECO-ASEFAVE 2024 Award for the Best Light Facade!
The award ceremony was held last night in Madrid at the VETECO Fair where Jordi Sánchez, partner of BCQ, received the award from Alejandro Gea, President of the VETECO Organizing Committee.
The façade of the library is an outstanding and specially designed element so that all the spaces of the library enjoy a magnificent natural lighting, filtered and controlled, while its articulated geometry allows to orient the visuals in many different angles; from any corner of the reading spaces it allows to have a magnificent view of the trees, the garden and the old town.
The double façade (glazed interior and exterior with vertical Accoya wood slats) allows the creation of intermediate spaces between the two envelopes. These spaces of different widths create intermediate spaces that are understood as penetrations of the garden inside the library building, as well as being useful to facilitate the maintenance and cleaning of the glass surfaces.
The proposal developed by Egoin for solar protection based on radiata pine laminated beams with Accoya treatment solves the problems of sunlight and glare. The arrangement of the slats, as an almost sculptural element due to the complex geometry of the volume, protects each facade and orientation in a specific way.
This arrangement is especially useful on the west façade to prevent solar radiation from entering the interior (energy savings and absence of glare) without blocking views from the interior to the garden. On the north facades, it constitutes an air filter that protects from the morning sun in summer. Given its north or west orientation, the air contained between the facades is expected to be a few degrees cooler than the outside air. This air feeds the library’s air conditioning system, significantly reducing its consumption.
